Teresa Tam Studio - San Francisco Bay Area, Boston Photographer
Teresa Tam started photography in the late 1990's, and then began photographing performing artists in 2006 while she was working on her masters in vocal performance at Boston University. Later she found her true photographic strength in portraiture during her intensive studies at the Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts. The background in music as a performer herself allow her to relate and connect with artists of all kinds. Perfectionism and sensitivities from her extensive performing arts experience gave her the unique abilities to translate each person’s personality in the most polished, yet genuine look onto the photographs. Great portrait is an image “about” the person, not just “of” the person. Most of us feel vulnerable and intimated in front of the big camera. Teresa make the effort to really communicate with her subject to instill trust and help them relax and have fun at the shoot. Teresa handle the consultation, photo shoot, as well as the post production to ensure the best possible quality of your final images. Whether you are looking for artist/business head shot, promotional shots, engagement, wedding, concerts, or just a beautiful piece of fine art image for your wall, all end products will be polished and tailored to your exact needs.

Flores "Teresa, I had a great time working with you and absolutely love your photos! You have such a wonderful eye and a rare talent for capturing beauty and personality" - Sarah Paysnick "Your work is exquisite. Your understanding of light and shadow reminds me of the old masters, old films as well. It is the mark of artistry, not just talent" - Wendy L. Geffner-Smith "I am constantly AMAZED at your talent, but more so for your heart" - Dana Kong "You capture the possibilities with your talent" - Keng Wong "Teresa Tam photographed and recorded students who participated in our music education program in urban Boston schools - 'Classroom Cantatas.' "She truly captured the process, both in audio and visually, of fourth graders composing and singing their own songs, and she artfully arranged her portrait into a DVD montage of the program. "Teresa also took the time to interview students, teachers and teaching artists in the program, so that her portrait presented the most thorough and deep understanding of what was happening in 'Classroom Cantatas'. "Teresa has helped our organization spread the word about the program; we use it regularly to introduce funders and others to what we do in this long-term sophisticated music residency. "And they 'get it' - both the soul and the nuts and bolts of it - when they view Teresa's work." - Judy Bose, Cantata Singers

April 30, 2013April continue to be quite busy for Teresa Tam Studio. In addition to photographing the Draeger’s Cooking School in San Mateo, we did an environmental portraiture shoot for their human resource department. The new images will enhance and update Draeger’s career opportunities page on their website (www.draegers.com) for them to attract new qualified employees. The following week Mills College in Oakland invited me back to photograph their Mills Alumnae Quarterly Magazine Reading and Writing issue. We also photographed the last Herbst Theatre concert before the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center’s major renovation for the next two and a half years. This last concert featured Classical guitarist Pepe Romero and it was presented by Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts and San Francisco Performance.
April 16, 2013March to April has been a whirlwind of spring. I wrapped up with month of March photographing the concert of the famous Beijing Guitar Duo at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music presented by Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts presented in association with San Francisco Performance. April began with documenting the semi-final of the Jazz Search West competition at the brand new SFJazz Center presented by Living Jazz. In the same week, I photograph the family owned gourmet Draeger’s Market's Cooking School for their exciting launch of the new website. The following week I got hired by PS Communication to cover event photography and portraits at the national sales meeting for Treasury Wine Estate at the beautiful Meritage Hotel and Resort in Napa California. I even got to document the unveiling of Ampoule Project by the Austrailian Winery, Penfolds To wrap up the weekend, I photographed one of the most musical classical guitarist Vladimir Gorbach at the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center Green Room Check out photo highlights, please visit my photo gallery at http://teresatamstudio.photoshelter.com/gallery-collection/Omni-Concerts-2012-2013/C0000bFSscE2_qgU).
March 28, 2013February and March involved a lot of traveling. Before I went on the road, I photographed a regular rehearsal of the San Francisco Civic Symphony to help them build more presences and publicity materials. Later I had the pleasure to photograph a winter wedding outside of Boston Massachusetts at the famous historic Old Sturbridge Village. The wedding had an incredibly intimate and warm atmosphere just like the lovely couple. After surviving the freezing blizzard in Boston, I headed west to warm sunny Phoenix Arizona. In addition to visiting my beautiful family, I photographed the friendly staffs and office space of the brand new South Valley Dentistry. The annual Ostrich Festival in Chandler AZ was a blast and an incredible opportunities for me to create a collection of family portraits of my adorable nieces and nephew. My AZ trip ended with my first Spring Training game of the San Francisco Giants at the Scottsdale Stadium.
February 11, 2013I feel both overwhelmed and inspired after an incredible ten day trip to NAMM, Josuhua Tree National Park, Phonix, Tucson, Sadona, and Grand Canyon. It was an eye-opening experience to have seen an artist like Miyavi performing live at the Taylor Guitars show. The visit throughout all the stunning landscape in Arizona had helped me crossed off a few items on my bucket list. Even as a professional photographer, I still could not do justice of the vast creation of nature. I came back in town just in time for the Super Bowl so I could cheer on my San Francisco 49ers. As disappointed as I was with the outcome of the game, I was able to drown my sorrow in the legendary guitarist Tommy Emmanuel's music at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater. This was my second year of photographing his performance presented by the Omni Foundation of performing arts and his artistry continues to elevate.
January 2, 2013January has come and it is very exciting now that the new year has come. I look forward to attending the National Association of music merchants conventionin Anaheim California later this month. It would be so much fun photographing anything and everything music related. There will be performances of legendary and upcoming musicians sponsored by music companies of all sorts. In addition to event photograph, I will look for unique portrait / photo opportunities as well.
December 14, 2012December is in motion and holiday madness is in full force. To continue documenting Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts. I photographed one of the most distinguished and esteemed Japanese classical guitarists of all time - SHIN-ICHI FUKUDA at Herbst Theatre presented in association with San Francisco Performance. In addition to photographing legendary guitarist, I had a fun wacky rock n’ roll shoot with my client Mike Gillespie, who is the director of WINE BY AIR INTERNATIONAL, Inc., a Wine Transportation Specialists. He is an inspired singer-songwriter who is looking to show off his crazy glam cowboy 80’s image. We did location head shots, promotional photos all over the SF Bay Area. The images will be featured on his brand new album.
November 27, 2012Tts been an eventful and exciting holiday season. In the category of entertainment photography, I had the distinc pleasure of photographing the impressive Brazil Guitar Duo. João Luiz and Douglas Lora delivered a dynamic and seamless performance for the audiences of the Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts at the The Green Room at the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center. Within the same weekend, I also documented the Americano Music Duo Melody Walker and Jacob Groopman headlining at the famous Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley . The following week I had a day long epic photo shoot for my favorite Japanese restaurant Kobe Sake in San Bruno. The chefs created stunning speciality crazy rolls, Nigiris, and various tasty appetizers for me to photograph. We also shot documentary style for action shots of them creating their food. It would not be a Teresa Tam Studio shoot if we did not also create beautiful portraits of the chefs to go with the tantalizing food photography.
November 12, 2012Now that the election is over, we can look forward to the upcoming holiday madness coming up. My client Cecilia Lam took me out to out to dinner at St. Vincent to thank me for documenting her wedding at San Francisco City Hall and Santa Rosa Rancho Wikiup ranch. It made me feel just how important and meaningful my job is as a photographer. I am also looking forward to my corporate headshot session. Our goal is to modernize and update my client’s look. It will propel his career and confidence upward.
October 26, 2012This week began with a fantastic outdoor promotional photoshoot for two young and vibrant guitarists - Duo SF. Robert O’Connor Miller and Christopher Mallett are not only a dynamic guitar duo, they also run the successful The California Conservatory of Guitar. We decided to shoot at Golden Gate Park first by the amphitheater, and then by the de Young Museum. I will be photographing the second concert of the Omni Foundation of Performing Arts Dynamite Guitar series. It will be featuring the Pacific Guitar Ensemble at the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center Green Room. The members consist of guitarts David Tanenbaum, Peppino D’Agostino, Marc Teicholz, Lawrence Ferrara, Michael Bautista, Jon Mendle, Paul Psarras and Antoniy Kakamakov
October 9, 2012With the start of fall season, the concert season began as well. The week began with an amazing concert of Brazilian singer, pianist, and composer Clarice Assad at the San Francisco Yoshi’s. Later in the week I attended the season opener concert of the Berkeley Symphony at the Zellerbach Hall. The orchestra premiered an unique and thrilling Quadrachord concerto composed by Paul Dresher. Conductor Joana Carneiro was commanding, elegant, and impressive. Friday night I got to photographed the season opener concert of the Omni Foundation Dynamite Guitar Series featuring the legendary Odair Assad at San Francisco Conservatory of Music. As a surprise, SFCM’s guitar faculty and Odair’s famous Assad Duo brother Sergio Assad performed a set of Duo pieces for the excited audiences. It was a surreal experience and an honor to photograph one of the most iconic Guitar Duo in the world. I look forward to document all the world class musicians in the upcoming season.
September 20, 2012Counting down to the beautiful fall season here in San Francisco Bay Area. The Wedding I photographed at Casa Real Ruby Hill Winery in Pleasanton California was a great success. My new Nikon D800 is opening up new shooting possibilities such as extreme low light situation and broadcast quality 1080p HD videos. With new concert season beginning, I am excited to photographing world class musicians performing in the Dynamite Guitars concert of The Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts. I will also have the pleasure to document various concerts for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. With my new portable lighting equipment of the ELINCHROM Ranger Quadra, I plan to take my creativity to more extreme outdoor locations. With the help of beautiful sassy dancer Chelsea Martin, together we will elevate and expand my styles of narrative portraiture.
September 14, 2012Feeling a bit shocked that the summer came and went already. I am looking forward to photographing a wedding taking place at Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery in Pleasanton California. I am excited to see what my Nikon D800 is capable of in the various lighting situation. Later this month I will get to document an important annual alumni event at Mills College. I will again have the pleasure to work with the Stanford Jazz Festival’s big fund raiser in Woodside featuring performances of legendary Jazz Musicians. Of course there will be more portrait designs and head shots too. I may have a chance to collaborate with founder of Fandalism Philip Kaplan on his modern non-traditional corporate head shot. I am pumped !
September 4, 2012Feeling fulfilled and blessed wrapping up the summer and Labor day weekend photographing elegant weddings at San Francisco City Hall and the historic Rancho Wikiup in Santa Rosa. The words wedding guests use to describe the images were stunning, breathtaking, and even “to die for.” After documenting all the wonderful festivities with amazing musicians, I am back working on the finishing touches of the corporate headshots I shot in Boston. After all the hard work this summer, a much deserved upgrade is happening soon. Teresa Tam Photography Studio will have even more fun and flexibilities shooting on location with the new Elinchrom Ranger Quadra Pro Set Light and Nikon D800 DSLR.
August 21, 2012After my east coast trip to Pittsburgh and Boston, Teresa Tam Studio dove straight into photographing the Stanford Jazz Festival concerts and workshops. It was inspiring to document the numerous magical moments between musicians and audiences. I was especially excited to be capturing dynamic images that speaks volume for their next year’s poster, brochure, website, and marketing materials. The rest of the summer is going to be filled with book author head shots, lovely couple’s engagement session, and beautiful city hall and ranch style wedding with yummy food trucks.
July 1, 2012Photoshoot with the author of The Dig, Michael Siemsen
Teresa Tam Photography Studio can not be happier with the stunning portraits and promotional photos we created for the author of The Dig, Michael Siemsen. In additional to designing modern head shots for him, we created a series mysterious, striking, and powerful environmental portraitures that will be used to promote his upcoming book sequel. As a specialist of music/performance photographing, we are so excited to be photographing live concerts of world class musicians at the Stanford Jazz Workshop this summer. It is part of our mission as photographer to help document and present the arts/music community in the best possible light. The next step for us is to bring sexy back into the professional business corporate world and revolutionize the standard of corporate head shots.
June 15, 2012Center for Digital Imaging Arts
Prior to CDIA, I received my masters in vocal performance from Boston University College of Fine Arts. I met a BU Photojournalism grad at a rehearsal for our big annual concert at the Boston Symphony Hall and she recommend me to check out CDIA.
During my time at CDIA, I invited some of my musician friends as my models when I was in my portrait modules. After graduation, I continued working with numerous artists. My favorite part of each project is building connection with my subject way before I point my camera at them. Through understanding their personalities, hopes, dreams, and fears, I then can tailor the photo shoots to their specific photographic needs. My experience helped me realized that portraitures is truly what I enjoy creating most.
Growing up immersed in music, I have always enjoyed the differences and beauty that subtle details can make. Through the past few years, I fond my sensibilities and aesthetics from musical background translated into to my images. Began mostly with standard head shots, it wasn't long before I started experimenting with environmental portraiture. Due to the limited access to equipment, my shoot style evolved to using mostly natural light and portable lightings that are economical. My philosophy is to create maximum impact with minimum amount of gears.
